What SIMPLE JOY Really Means To Me

A Personal Note from Sumedang

When people ask me what "simple joy" means, I used to struggle to put it into words. I’d say things like "the little things" or "being happy with what you have" – but it never felt quite right. It wasn’t until I sat on a small stone wall overlooking my neighborhood in Sumedang one evening that it finally clicked.

IT STARTED WITH RICE FIELDS

The sun was setting, painting the sky over the rice fields in soft oranges and purples. Below me, farmers were packing up their tools – laughing as they called out to each other across the wet earth. A breeze carried the smell of damp soil and kemangi (basil) from a nearby garden.

In that moment, I didn’t have a plan. I wasn’t checking my phone or thinking about tomorrow’s to-do list. I was just there – watching how the last rays of sun made the water in the rice paddies glow like scattered coins.

That’s when I realized: simple joy isn’t just about small things – it’s about being fully present for them.

TO ME, SIMPLE JOY IS...

- Not rushing past the familiar: It’s stopping to say "salam" to the uncle who sells Tahu every morning, even when I’m in a hurry.

- Finding magic in the mundane: It’s noticing how dew clings to corn leaves in the morning, or how my mom’s hands move as she rolls lumpia.

- Celebrating small connections: It’s waving to neighbors as they walk by, or sharing a laugh with the kids who play soccer on our street after school – these little bonds make our community feel like family.

- Letting go of "more": It’s choosing to sit on our porch with a cup of tea instead of scrolling for something "exciting" – because the warmth in my hands and the sound of chickens clucking is enough.

- Tying to place: It’s feeling rooted to this land – knowing that every hill I climb, every market I visit, and every warung I stop at is part of what makes me who I am.

IT’S NOT ALWAYS EASY

I won’t lie – there are days when I feel restless. When I scroll through photos of faraway places and wonder if I’m missing out. But then I walk down to the warung near my place, and the aunty just hands me a glass of warm teh tawar without me even asking. She just knows.

That’s what simple joy really means to me: it’s the space between "what I want" and "what I have" – where gratitude lives. And it’s why I started Simple Joy 101 – to share these moments from Sumedang, and hopefully help you find your own simple joy too.
